According to the YouTube post, his whole squad was pinned down.  So he ran out in the open to draw the Taliban's fire.

It also says he got hit four times, including in the side of his
helmet.  And apparently none of the other
bullets made it through his flak jacket. 
But at one point, he starts yelling that he's "hit."
